Newsletter of the Stockton Art League May 2001

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

WE ARE PROGRESSING!

Tim Poe is doing a great job refurbishing our gallery. We had a problem with the ugly duct work though. We had decided to replace it with new duct work placed on the ceiling. But before we could Tim had to patch a large hole in the plaster and before he could do that we had to take down the old ugly duct work. So, I got a couple of young men and they, with Tim, pulled down the duct work. Looks much better already.

Leonard George has been working hard, taking pictures and designing signs for our building. These were approved at our last meeting and they were ordered.

Aleen Gall has ordered the hanging system which was chosen. Aleen, Joyce Anderson and Shirley Stockstill have picked out the color of the interior walls.

Beverly Lamontagne has been working hard assembling bids for our track lighting system and upon meeting soon this will be decided.

Last Collagraph we enclosed a Survey of our members interest which I thought was a good idea. HOWEVER! I received only 12 returns out of 140???

The 50th Exhibition at the Haggin is getting much closer, August 19-September 30. Being our 50th it would be great if we could come up with a special and unique idea to celebrate. If you have any ideas please call Tina Moore at 931-2529 or Don Baker at 951-5367.

In closing may I remind you to prepare your art work for showing at our very own art gallery which may open sooner than you think. (We will have our Grand Opening later in the fall).

REMINDER!! The Board and Gallery Committee Meeting will be held at the Gallery,. Wednesday, May 2nd at 3:00 PM.

Artistically,
Don Baker

Date: Thursday, May 10, 2001

Time: 7:00 P.M.

Place: Stockton Art League Gallery, 1902 Pacific St., Stockton

Program: HELEN CARKIN -- Batik Demonstration Carkin

The ancient Javanese method of making batik is done by successive waxing and dyeing of the material (silk) on which the pattern or picture is produced. At no time is the color applied in a method other than the complete immersion of the piece in the cold dye bath. Thus, the resultant colors are always analogous to one another. The hot wax is applied with her specially-designed "tjanting tool" to achieve as fine a design as possible. This specific method is very time consuming and tedious, taking, in some cases, months to complete one piece. The resultant batik can never be duplicated. You will have a Carkin original!

Because sunlight can be harmful to any artwork, Helen Carkin obtained special permission from the county to build her private home gallery without windows. Her gallery is an assembly of batiks so lifelike they literally fool the eye. A shimmering golden-orange hibiscus suspended on a jet black background is one of many of her flower series. Along the wall, lush scenes of Kauai, which the viewer might mistake for subdued color prints, hang next to reproductions of rustic turn-of-the-century homes and buildings in the California Gold Country.

Originally trained as a scientific illustrator, Helen earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Minnesota and her master's degree in education from the University of Nevada. She moved to Chico in 1958 to teach in the education department at California State University, and in 1088, she retired as professor emerita.

Batik has not been Helen's only artistic outlet. She has also published several books in the historical and artistic fields and in 1968 produced a 16 mm. film about teaching art to retarded children.

Helen shares her batik secrets with art students. Her classes have taken her as far west as Kauai, north to Alaska, down the coast to the Monterey Peninsula College, and east to Georgia Southern State College

An award-winner in numerous prestigious exhibitions nationwide, Helen has also had many solo shows. Her memberships include the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Clary/Miner Gallery, California Arts League, Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, Pioneer Arts and Valley Art Association.
